JCrew Sale Dresses

Yes, I am on a dress kick. I ordered two dresses on sale from JCrew last week. They are both the same style, different fabrics. I had in mind a casual summer wedding or a bridal/baby shower, or a fun night out in good weather!

I ordered both of these dresses in a size 10 for two reasons--a bit more length and to make sure to be able to wear a strapless bra with them. I had tried on an 8 in one of them before and it fit fine but was too short. The dresses below are slightly longer, but they still are falling on the short end of my comfort level. A few of you have been asking about my height--I am almost 5'9", with a long torso and stubbier legs (blah).

Disclaimer: Please ignore my weird photo setup, funny pose, chubby knees, and need for a haircut and more of a tan in these pictures.

First up, the Metallic Linen Strapless Dress. I really like the fabric of this--its like a dressy chunky linen weave. The metallic is not too sparkly at all. Hits about 2 inches above my knee--wish it was about an inch and a half longer :) I added a brown leather belt as they have it styled in the catalog, you can find it online for $99.99 here. Also...these dresses have pockets!

Check out a closeup on the bodice and pleating.

Next up, the Linen Constellation Strapless Dress. Same exact cut I think, fabric a bit lighter. You can find it online here for $99.99. Again, wish it was slightly longer. I really like the bright and cheery red and pink color combo of this one, its a bit different for me but a fun change.

The jury is out on these, I like them both but am going to think about it. For some reason, even though the dresses fit all right, I get a "big person in a little dress" vibe from strapless dresses on me lately, which may just be a complex I have. I really like that they are cute and feminine and great for summer, so I am hanging on to them to make a decision.

Have you seen these dresses in person? Tried them on? What did you think? Any other JCrew dresses you have your eye on?

  1. I think these dresses both look very cute on you. They would be great summer dresses to have. But if you aren't comfy and don't feel great in them, I would return them. (I am trying to abide by that rule, to only buy things I really love that I feel really great in.)

  2. The dresses are cute (like the constellation one best!) but I had to comment to say I love your Ork Posters on the wall! I've been thinking about getting one of those -- I think they're so cool.

  3. OK. I am 5'10" and I own both of these dresses. Seriously, WHY do you think they are to short???? I honestly don't get it. If they were any longer you would look matronly. Remember they are summer, above knee dresses!

  4. Oooh, love the red/pink dress! It looks fab on you. I'm not crazy about the first one, it looks kind of blah and boring? But maybe it looks better IRL.

  5. I tried on the second dress, and it wasn't for me, but you look great in both of them! :)

  6. You look great in both dresses! The 2nd one is definately more fun but the 1st would be great for a bridal shower, a bit dressier. But keep what you feel comfortable in, otherwise they will just be pretty dresses hanging in your closet.

  7. I think both dresses look fantastic on you, and I absolutely LOVE the red and pink one! I also agree that you should return them if you don't feel comfortable, otherwise they will become *museum* pieces in your closet. Have you considered wearing a cardigan with them?

Btw...I LOVE your haircut! I noticed in your previous pics that you've had it for awhile, but I haven't been online recently so this is my first time seeing you. You look FABULOUS!!! :)

  8. You're looking great in both & esp in the constellation dress. You have great shoes so you can pull it together. I know what you mean about the length, but I agree they are meant to be just above the knee. If you don't feel good, definitely return, but you def look good esp rockin' the new hair.

  9. Oh...I also think the length of the dresses look great on you...not too short at all.

  10. You look great in both, I think the style really suits you. That said, I have the first dress (and wore it belted with the Glazed Pecan cardigan to work) and while I got lots of compliments, I felt uncomfortable in it all day- as I moved around it just didn't feel good. That's not to say you would feel that way (I actually think the dress fits you better than mine does me) but I just wanted to offer that insight.

  13. I think both of the dresses look good. I like the red one more on you. Also, I do not get the "get person in a little dress" vibe from these pictures at all. But again, I think the most important thing in any piece of clothing is how comfortable you are wearing it. If you think you're going to constantly think about that while wearing it, don't keep it.

  14. I just purchased my constellation srapless dress in size 10 with the 20% off. Can't wait to get it! Very cute summer dress. If it fits great it's a keeper :o)

  15. I Do get your big person in little dress feeling; no offense, but these make you look a little chubby, don't know why, bec. you are not. But, if you like them, keep them. But, if you won't wear them, def. return.

  16. I think you look FANTASTIC in the red dress! The beige color is fine, but is not a "wow" look.

  17. No no no! No big person!! Just fab. flawless and fab. You look AWESOME in both!

Colourwise, the pink is a nice pop, but the neutral is pretty too. Tough choice!

  18. I think you look good in both as well! You may want to get a spray tan before you wear the beige dress and add some jewelry!

I am thinking of getting the beige dress, I am 5'9 and weigh 138. I usually wear a size 8. Do you you normally wear a size 8? Can I ask how much you weigh? This will help me to pick out the right dress size. Thank you for your post!
